The 75 Soft Challenge: rules, trackers, and a kinder way to keep going.
Everything the format is, how it differs from 75 Hard, and what the science says about the day you miss.
What is the 75 Soft Challenge?
75 Soft is a community-born habit challenge: a lighter, liveable version of the rigid 75 Hard. There is no official rulebook — different creators circulate slightly different lists — but the commonly shared version looks like this:
- Eat reasonably well. Not a diet — a general direction. Most versions say "eat well most of the time."
- Move once a day. Usually one workout, with many versions allowing active rest days (a walk counts).
- Drink water. Commonly ~2–3 litres, adjusted to your body.
- Read a few pages. Often 5–10 pages of any book.
Because it is a community format rather than a branded program, treat any exact list as a starting template, not law. The point of 75 Soft is a rhythm you can actually keep.
75 Soft vs 75 Hard — the honest comparison
| 75 Hard | 75 Soft | |
|---|---|---|
| Workouts | 2× 45 min daily, one outdoors, no exceptions | 1 daily movement; rest days allowed |
| Food | Strict diet, zero alcohol, zero cheat | Eat reasonably well |
| Water | 1 gallon (3.8 L) | ~2–3 L |
| Reading | 10 pages non-fiction | 5–10 pages, any book |
| Photos | Daily progress photo | Not required |
| If you miss | Back to day 1. | Continue. The miss is data, not a verdict. |
75 Hard is a test of extremes; 75 Soft is a practice of repetition. Choose the first if you want a crucible. Choose the second if you want a habit that survives February.
Why most people break — and why that's fine
Here is the part almost nobody tells you: breaking is not the failure of the method — it is a normal stage of habit formation, and it is already mapped in the research.
- Habits take longer than the famous "21 days." In a study of everyday habit formation, the average time to automaticity was 66 days — with a range of 18 to 254 (Lally, van Jaarsveld, Potts & Wardle, European Journal of Social Psychology, 2010).
- The same study found that missing one opportunity did not materially affect the habit-forming process. One missed day is statistically irrelevant; the spiral of shame after it is what actually kills the habit.
- Self-criticism after a lapse reliably reduces persistence, while self-compassion after a lapse increases it (Breines & Chen, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 2012).
the chain changes colour. it never breaks.
A tracker that survives a missed day
Most 75 Soft trackers are grids of boxes: fill them all or watch the grid accuse you. If you have ever abandoned a journal in week three, you know that grid.
A gentler system, borrowed from kintsugi — the Japanese craft of repairing pottery with gold:
- Days you show up get inked solid.
- Days you miss get ringed in gold — marked, honoured, part of the pattern. Not erased. Not restarted.
The chain changes colour. It never breaks. Fifty days in, you do not have a perfect record — you have proof that you come back. That is the skill the challenge was supposed to teach anyway.
Fifty Days — a journal built for the day it breaks
If you are starting 75 Soft (or recovering from 75 Hard), Fifty Days is a guided journal made for exactly this rhythm: five phases — Start, Stumble, Hold, Deepen, Keep — each with its science and its own restart ritual. Five quiet minutes a day, undated, hyperlinked.

What are the rules of the 75 Soft Challenge?
The commonly shared version: eat reasonably well, move once a day, drink water, read a few pages — for 75 days. Lists vary by creator; it is a community format, not a trademarked program.
What is the difference between 75 Soft and 75 Hard?
75 Hard is all-or-nothing — two daily workouts, strict diet, a gallon of water, progress photos, and a miss sends you back to day 1. 75 Soft keeps the daily rhythm and drops the extremes and the restart rule.
What happens if I miss a day?
Nothing bad. Missing a single day does not materially affect habit formation (Lally et al., 2010). Mark it without a story and continue tomorrow.
Is there a 75 Soft tracker that does not reset?
Yes — Fifty Days rings missed days in gold instead of restarting you. iPad + print, instant download.
